Each year, the Berlin Philharmonic Education Department hosts an educational project. Four Berlin schools are invited to take part in a series of musical workshops. The general direction of this year’s Galaxy Project was Gustav Holst’s 'The Planets’. The schools were commissioned by the Philharmonic to develop a concept describing a fictional planet and to compose a piece for public performance.
The individual schools’ input does not stop with the musical composition. They were also encouraged to consider the public performance of their pieces and the visualisation of the music in relation to set design and performance. flora&fauna visions took part in the later workshops that led up to the final concert and encouraged the creativity of the individual groups.
Using lighting and projection (slide and video), flora&fauna visions provided a visual backdrop to the individual performances. It was our objective to give the children as much free rein as possible and to realise where possible their vision of their planets. On the 16th of February 2006, the concert took place before a packed house. This was a dramatic culmination to a fine project that all participants enjoyed immensely.
